Drivers Guild To Celebrate the Drivers Who Keep New York City Moving with Driver Appreciation Day in Queens

NYC Vaccine Van Will Pay $100 for Each Uber/Lyft Driver or Family Member Getting First Shot

New York, New York — On Saturday, August 7th, the Independent Drivers Guild will hold its ride-hail Driver Appreciation Day in Queens. The annual family fun day celebrates the for-hire vehicle drivers who keep our city moving and their families. The 2019 event brought together more than 1,000 New York City drivers and already more than 2,000 drivers have RSVP’d to attend this year’s event.

In addition to bringing together drivers and their families for a barbecue and fun family activities like face painting, this year’s event will also include a NYC COVID-19 vaccination van so that drivers and their families can protect themselves and their customers as the Delta variant spreads in the city and around the world. The vaccine van will be offering both single shot vaccinations (J&J) and the double shot vaccines (Pfizer).

All New York City area ride-hail drivers and their families are invited to attend and may RSVP here. This year’s event will include:

  • The NYC Vaccine Van and $100 incentives for every driver or family member who receives their first shot! (On site 9am – 7pm)
  • The MetroPlus Health Benefits Van so drivers and their families can sign up for free or low cost health insurance.
  • The Drivers Benefits Vision Van so drivers can sign up for free benefits including vision, dental and telemedicine.

The Independent Drivers Guild is the nation’s largest rideshare driver advocacy group which represents and advocates for more than 200,000 app-based drivers, including more than 100,000 in New York State alone. The Guild has organized to win landmark victories for drivers since its launch in 2016, including a pay raise and the nation’s first minimum wage for app-based drivers, free benefits, and requiring Uber to have a tipping option in the app. The IDG is a non-profit worker center affilliated with the Machinists Union.

The Independent Drivers Guild has been the leading voice for the health and safety of ride-hail riders and drivers both before and during the Coronavirus pandemic. Amid the Coronavirus pandemic, the Guild successfully advocated for a ban on pool rides, a mask mandate for riders and drivers and compensation for sick and high risk Uber, Lyft and Via drivers not just in New York City but across the nation. At the epicenter of America’s coronavirus outbreak in the spring of 2020, New York drivers found themselves without masks or sanitizer amid a worldwide shortage. The Guild worked quickly with partners to secure and distribute safety kits to more than ten thousands drivers who were still on the streets transporting hospital workers and other essential personnel and IDG is continuing to distribute safety kits as the city opens up.  The Guild also partnered with the NYU School of Global Public Health to create COVID-19 safety training for rideshare drivers.

The Guild’s work expanding driver benefits and protections over the years also played a critical role in protecting the health of riders and drivers throughout the pandemic, from securing running water restrooms (providing critical hand washing stations) for drivers at Newark, La Guardia and JFK airports for the very first time to winning free telemedicine benefits for drivers.
